13th SAG Men’s Football final from the street of Kathmandu

Nepal reached the final of south asian games Men’s football final in the year 1999. It was held at Dasrath Stadium. We were so confident that Nepal will bag the goal medal. The atmosphere of the stadium so lovely. I still have a good memory of that final.

Nepal lost to Bangladesh 1-0 and the stadium was silence at the last moment. This year 2 players from that team were coaching the ladies and mens team. Both of them reach the final. Ladies team lost to India yesterday. It was coached by Hari Khadka. The men’s team is coached by Balgopal Maharjan.

I am sure he has recalled the lost this time and wanted that gold medal as a coach. I was too excited to watch this match at the stadium, but due to some technical problem from ESEWA (online ticketing partner of SAG 2019) I could not buy the ticket.

This time there is a big TV screen at UWTC building at Tripureshwore, so me and my friend Binod watch the game there. It was a different environment. We were sitting on the street and the road was closed down due to the crowd.

Finally, Nepal won the game with the score line 2-1 against Bhutan. When the final whistle was blown the crowd chanted Nepal Nepal Nepal. I also started saying YO JEET KASKO and the crowd said NEPAL KO. After many years I chanted that way.

For the Bhutanese team, they displayed a different game in this whole tournament. A lot of improvement in their game. Finally, Bhutan also won their first ever silver medal in football.

A big congratulation to Nepal Under 23 football team and their coach Mr. Balgopal Maharjan.

Here are some picture and video from the street of Tripureshwore.
