Gai Jatra festival in Bhaktapur

Gai Jatra is the festival to commemorate the death of the people during the year. The festival mostly is celebrated by the Newar community. It is one of the biggest festival of Kathmandu valley. All the three major cities of Kathmandu have it’s own way of celebrating this festival. This year I went to Bhaktapur to see the festival, it’s a different than the one I have been used to see at Basantapur Durbar Square, Kathmandu.

Roopai ashar 15 nepal dhanding chattre deurali

As the monsoon arrives, most of the farmers get bussy for the preparation for the roopai (rice plantation). In Nepal Ashar 15 is celebrated as the day for rice plantation, it is also popularly known as dahi chiura khane din (yogurt and beaten rice eating day).
The fun part of this festival is that all family members and neighbors get together to help in the plantation of rice for each other’s fields. It shows the unity among the people and how they help each other’s is good and bad times.

It’s been 4 years that I have not observed the festival of Holi at Kathmandu. Heard that since last year the trend of Holi has changed. So this year I could not stop myself from taking out my camera and take a walk around the city.

As I went to Basantapur, it was a different scenario. I have never seen such a crowd gathering at the durbar square to celebrate Holi. Live music, DJ’s, colors and water what else people need to celebrate this festival of colors.

Pashupatinath temple, a Hindu temple on the banks of the river bagmati dedicated to lord Shiva. It is one of the biggest shrine for Hindu devotees. It is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.

Every year on the day of Maha Shivaratri many people visit the temple, at night it just looks majestic with all these colourful lights. Here are some picture which I captured today.

The Beauty of Rani Pokhari

Chhath is one of the biggest festival of eastern Terai of Nepal, and Bihar and Jhaarkhand state of India. The Chhath Puja is performed in order to thank Surya (Sun) for sustaining life on earth and to request the granting of certain wishes.
Since the migration of people from Terai to Kathmandu valley, now this festival is not just observed in terai. It is becoming more popular every year in kathmandu and Locals have also started to celebrate it with their friends from terai.

In Kathmandu, Rani Pokhari is main attraction place for people celebrating Chhath . The other places where is can be observed are the banks of river Bagmati around Kalmochan Ghat, Kopundole, Thapathali, Pashupati and many more places beside Bagmati river. Some picture from Rani pokhari are here.
