Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but its sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in the relative way, but you’re older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought I’d something more to say

Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
And when I come home cold and tired
Its good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells.

The above lyric is from the song “TIME” by Pink Floyd from their album Dark Side of The Moon. I feel this lyric has so many things to tell. I have heard so many songs, but the lyric of this song has special place in my heart. It’s not about a love song to memories to remember your girlfriend. This lyric is more than a love; it is above all the lyrics I have heard. I would like to keep this lyric above all the lyrics that have been written and that will be written in future. It is the most inspirational lyrics that the world will listen to.

This lyric really tells you about the value of “TIME”. If I have the power of making a curriculum of grade 8 or 9, I would have kept this lyric in English literature subject. When the students are at grade 8 and 9 , they think of their future plans and I think this lyric will be inspirational to them.

Each line in this lyric has deep meaning, value of time. It has defined TIME in simple but in a heart touching way.

Lines like :

You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but its sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again

When we are young, most of the people like me are careless about time, we think we still have lots of time, but later we realize that the valuable time are just gone by. We are too late to start and we remain behind always. We have already missed the starting gun, it will be really hard for us to catch the people who ran in time. Most likely we will always be behind them.

The sun is the same in the relative way, but you’re older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

This is the most inspirational line I ever heard, it describe about there is time, but you are not suitable for that time. We need to take action in right time. Just like the sun is same, it rise every morning, but you are getting older every day, and we have no idea when we have reach to the bed to death. This line has described the whole story of “cheparo ko bholi” ( lizard’s tomorrow) a Nepali moral oriented story.

I think every teacher, parents and elder should let their child listen this beautiful composition and describe the lyric of the song to them. I am sure they will get aware of every seconds in time and try to utilize their valuable time.

Here is what the lyric writer has to say about his creation.

“The lyrics of the song deal with Roger Waters’s realization that life was not about preparing yourself for what happens next, but about grabbing control of your own destiny (he attributes his earlier ignorance of this to his mother’s obsession with education)” these lines were taken from Wikipedia.

In a way this song makes you reflect on your life, and want to accomplish more before death; at the same times it makes you have regrets about opportunities you should of taken or things you should of done.

As already mentioned the guitar solo is epic, David Gilmor makes the guitar cry unlike any artist I’ve heard. Not only that, the lyrics are almost larger than life.

this is one of the best songs ever recorded if you ask me.

listening to P Floyd, you really get a feel for what “true music” is, not this garbage that is being put out today, but real, thought-provoking lyrics that you can relate to. I think every person should listen to every PFloyd song in a dark quiet room, and let the lyrics really sink in. I am amazed at the lyrical genius of this band, who , many are not aware, take a lot of their views from ancient Chinese poetry and ideaology. Simply fantastic…

After listening to this song for years now, i tend to see as ironic at the highest level, being a chant for mass-men to be. for me when worried and sad time goes faster. i only felt literally like this song when i turned 10.

at this point, for me, it describes how by running you gain nothing. and, as a general idea, i relate it to Breathe, which is literally the opposite to Time, when in Breathe its said to overcome stupid advices and do what inspires us, crap advices like:

Dig that hole, forget the sun,
And when at last the work is done
Don’t sit down it’s time to dig another one.

i take time and breathe as the summit of irony in music

i still believe in work, but the fruitful and needed one for society to sustain and keep progressing, not stupid economic waste for stupid “power” people are made believe they want with their fancy cars and bullcrap. and what to say about capitalism, based on tempting fate, when society was created for the opposite reason. and well i still dont belive we have the country division system, when, now globalized, even poor people know that there´s no difference between people around the world in terms of mind consciousness. and still, the poor and brainwashed are sent to stupid wars to kill other people.

anyway, this song is totally ironic to me

Just visited Nepal and fell in love with your country! Coincidentally, the only album I listened to on the 20+ hour flight was “Dark Side of the Moon”

I am very intrigued to know the story of “Cheparo Ko Bholi” – can you email to me? I would be very grateful.

    Namaste!

I agree with all the positive comments about Pink Floyd here. The song made me get off my butt aged 24 and go to Australia for a year. Now it’s responsible for me giving up my stupid job of 6 years so that I can just be free. Might even go and live in Southeast Asia again (chasing the sun, of course).
