This year Nepal Sambat has been recognized by Nepal Government. It is big news for the Kathmandu Valley Newars; they have been celebrating this day every year and raising the voice to get official recognization from the government. Here I have tried to capture some wonderful moments how people celebrated this Nepal Sambat New Year 1129 at Basantapur.
I saw some tourist celebrating this festive time with local nears too and some watching it in exciting way. I read in someone’s blog who has visited Nepal saying that Nepal celebrates so many new years. Yeah I think we’re rich in culture and so many ethnic group lives with their own identity and they all have their own New Year.
Some new year we celebrate is
Bikram Sambat – North Indian calendar named after King Bikramaditya. It was adopted by the Shah Kings
Nepal Sambat – Celebrated by the Newars, it is celebrated on the day of Maah Pooja fourth day of tihar. It is said that on this day, a newar Business man Shanka Dhar Sakhwa paid all the debt on behalf of the people of Kathmandu Valley, so the newar started celebrating it as a new life for them. So every year they started celebrating it as a new year.
Loshar – Tibetans, Gurung and Tamang have their own loshar as New Year
International Calendar – January first, this is a new year I think whole world celebrates.
Today is the third day of the festival Tihar. We celebrated it by worshiping the goddess Laxmi, the god of wealth. I have captured some pictures of this festival from the streets of Kathmandu. It is really fun to see lights all over, Kids playing Deusi and fireworks and elder people busy with shopping.
But this year something made me sad, please see the pictures below and know why I am sad. There is just one picture that made me sad, other pictures are the one which might take some of my friends abroad to past, their childhood and make them think what they are missing.
Girls Playing Bhaili, This is one kind of fun that kids have in Tihar
Chinese democracy, in my opinion, is the most awaited album in the history of music. This album by Guns N’ Roses is still on its way to go public and make people crazy with their music and lyrics. It’s been a decade we heard Spaghetti Incident, the last album of Guns N’ Roses. All over the world, I guess Guns N’ Roses’ craze is not over yet. People still love Axl Rose; they like to attend his concerts even after he is the only original man present in the band.
One question that comes in my mind is when is it going to be released? Is it just a hoax? Every time the release date is being shifting by year. When are you guys going to be back with Chinese Democracy?
Being a fan of Rock music, I hate people who hate rock. Rock is not about long hairs, drugs and sex. Rock is that category of music which you need to feel. It is like fuel for life too. It gives you energy. Rock has been divided in many categories and sub categories and they have their own class and style of playing music.
Now-a-days we do not get the music that the rockers from 70’s, 80’s till mid 90’s created, but it is not dying. We may feel that hip hop and other kinds of music are taking the market. But they won’t make you feel what rock gives you. There are so many evergreen rock songs which I guess you will love till you get old. You will love to sing them.
When I heard this word “ROOM TO READ “, I thought it must be a library. I heard this word for the first time when it was going to donate two computers to “Pawan Madhayamic Vidhalaya”, Parasi which was established by my grandmother late Pawan Devi Shrestha. She has not just established this school, but she has also written a novel called “Pratigya” quite many years ago. We did not know that she is the first Nepalese woman to write a Nepali novel from mainland Nepal. Anyway, I will be writing about her soon in my blog.
Let’s talk about Room to Read. Well, we all must have to thank Mr. John Wood for his hard work, devotion and love toward educating the world to change the world. In his book “Leaving Microsoft to Change the World” he has written about all the hard times he had to faced, why he was inspired to leave Microsoft to change the world and how happy he was when he saw his dream in reality.
Initially, he wanted to help the school in remote areas of Nepal and established this organization. But now it has become a global organization which is working towards changing the world, to educate people, to change their life style and most importantly to make their life easier through good education. Many poor people from so called 3rd country like Nepal, Vietnam and African countries are benefited by this organization.
We were expecting some improvements in the security of the Nation after the formation of new cabinet. We got Mr. Bam Dev Gautam as our new Home Minister and as soon as he was sworn into that post he announced that he will improve the security and will take action on illegal activities of YCL and Youth Force.
But the current scenario is different, the government is not able to stop these wings of Maoist and UML and their activities are increasing by the day. In recent days, due to these forces, curfew had to be imposed in Dhankuta.
As for Kathmandu, our minister targeted the night life. He asked all the entertainment things that are run in Kathmandu valley. They should be closed by 11 pm in Kathmandu, 10 pm in Patan and Bhaktapur 9 pm. Don’t you think it is a straight interference on Human rights? We have rights to party, go to disco and pubs at night. Is this a type of democracy we were looking for?
Gai Jatra is a festival celebrated by the Newar community of kathmandu valley every year since the malla period. We see newars celebrating this festival in different cities where there is strong pesence of newars. Now a days we see other community also particiapting in this festival. It is one of the most popular festivals of Nepal. This festival comes just a day after Janai Purnima. The festival commemorates the death of people during the span of a year. Gai Jatra is a healthy festival which enables the people to accept the reality of death and to prepare oneself for the life after death. The festival of cows is one of the most popular festivals of Nepal.
I support Local Empowerment. So, I’m sharing this Everest Base Camp Trek to promote a new way of trekking where trekkers can empower the local service providers like lodges, guides and porters by booking services directly through them. #empoweringthehimalayas #freetriptoeverest
